Shim-gok Lecture Hall is used to worship Cho Gwang-jo, Jeong-am.
A lecture hall was planned to be constructed in this area where
his grave was, however due to lack of finance, the worship was
done in Chung-ryeol Lecture Hall. But in 1605, the 38th year of
King Seon-jo's reign, when this lecture hall was finally constructed
the memorial tablet of Cho Gwang-jo was placed here.
As soon it was constructed, it received a name of Shim-gok, and
another historical figure, Yang Paeng-son was worshiped here as
well. This is one of the 47 lecture halls which survived when
Dae-won-gun closed all the rest.
Shim-gok Lecture Hall is constructed based on a typical structure
of a lecture hall. An axis in the center of the hall links all
the others rooms and doors. It is located in a slope in front
of hill which is connected to Gwang-gyo and Hyeong-je mountain.
If you go up the stairs from the entrance and enter the outer
door, you will see a large open space surrounded by walls and
there you will see the lecture hall standing right in front of
you.
The building consists of shrines such as Il-so-dang, Jang-seo-gak,
inner and outer doors. In the shrine the memorial tablets which
belong to Cho Gwang-jo and Yang Paeng-son are kept. The portrait
of Cho Gwang-jo has been enshrined recently.
On the left and right side of the roof of the shrine boards are
overlapped and hung in order to block the wind. Il-j-dang is a
hall which consists of 3 compartments in the front and another
3 compartments in the side and whose roof has overlapped eaves
and in every compartments there are the wooden walls which work
as doors to welcome visitors.
The hall is used for different purposes ; different events including
meetings of Yu-rim and lectures. On the inner wall of the hall,
King Suk-jong's writing, regulations of the hall and other records
are hung. there is no private room in Shim-gok Lecture Hall since
at the end of the Cho-sun Dynasty it was considered as a lecture
hall for worshipping and there was no practical reason for having
a private room. Therefore, the building was constructed centering
the shrine, and buildings such as Jang-seo-gak was constructed
for other uses. In Jang-seo-gak 486 books of 67 types were kept,
however, many of them were stolen in 1985 leaving only few books
including 'Jeong-am Series'.
Worships are performed every February at this hall. Additionally,
within the building there is a 500 years-old zelcova which is
protected by the Kyeong-ki State.
